Coach Gillian played her prep basketball at Bishop Blanchet in Seattle before attending the University of Pacific on a full athletic scholarship where she received many awards and established numerous women’s basketball records.
After graduating in 2004, Gillian then went on to play professionally in Europe for eight years. She played in Belgium, England, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Austria. d’Hondt played for the Coca-Cola Rhondda Rebels of the English National Basketball League. The Rebels had been one of the most successful programs in women’s professional basketball in England since entering the league in 1998. The Rebels hold the championship trophies for the National Cup, the League and the Playoffs in 2005.
Coach d’Hondt won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia in 2006 as a member of the English National Team. Her English born father was a gold and silver medalist for the Canadian National Rowing Team in 1956 and 1960.
After retiring from playing basketball in 2012, Gillian moved back home and has been spending time with family and coaching. She has coached at Northwest University in Kirkland, East Seattle (a program out of the MI Boys and Girls Club) and has been a select coach for Mercer Island Girls Basketball.Coach d’Hondt is extremely excited to be the new Head Varsity girls coach at Mercer Island High School. She is looking forward to using her 20 years of playing experience all over the world to lead the girls to greatness. Gillian teaches solid pressure defense and team work and believes basketball provides a lifetime of lessons that will help the girls excel on and off the court!
